Two friends bonded closer than brothers; a small tight knit Irish community; the All-American family road trip; and one of the most dynamic and complex families in all American Theatre will help you rediscover the true meaning of family in Theatre In The Park’s 2011/2012 Mainstage Season. We have four mainstage shows that will make you reexamine what a true family is with some surprising results. And be sure to bring the entire family into the past, present and future with Ebenezer Scrooge in the internationally acclaimed hit musical comedy, A Christmas Carol. Ira David Wood III triumphantly returns as Scrooge in a limited engagement run. All dates and titles subject to change. Please note all evening performances start at 7:30pm.
Of Mice and Men
by John Steinbeck
Directed by Jesse R. Gephart
Lennie is built like an ox, but has the mind of a child. George is a slight, shrewd and fast-talking man of the road. Drifting from ranch to ranch in 1930s California, struggling to make a living as migrant workers, they depend on each other in their loneliness and alienation, their complex bond strengthened by dreams and plans for a better life on a farm of their own.
Steinbeck’s towering classic tragedy set against the backdrop of the Great Depression is a poignant portrait of the flipside of the American Dream and a friendship tested to its limits.

Stones In His Pockets
by Maria Jones
Directed by David Henderson
Combine a Hollywood film crew, a small Irish town, 15 characters, and only two talented actors, and you have Stones in His Pockets, a funny and moving play that explores sadness, the dangerous allure of Hollywood, and the goodness of real life. Charlie Conlon and Jake Quinn, who, like much of the town, are employed as extras for a big Hollywood film. Much of the comedy of the play is derived from the efforts of the production crew to create the proper “Irish feel”, a romanticized notion that often conflicts with the reality of daily life.

Leaving Iowa
Written by Tim Clue and Spike Manton
Regional Premiere! As a little roast to the classic family road trip, Leaving Iowa is the story of Don Browning, a middle-aged writer, who returns home and decides to finally take his father’s ashes to his childhood home, as requested. But when Don discovers Grandma’s house is now a grocery store, he begins traveling across Iowa searching for a proper resting place for his father.
This father-and-son road trip shifts smoothly from the present to Don’s memories of the annual, torturous vacations of his childhood. Don’s journey leads him to reconcile his past and present at the center of the United States. Leaving Iowa is a postcard to anyone who has ever found himself or herself driving alone on a road, revisiting fond memories of his or her youth.

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof
by Tennessee Williams
Directed by Ira David Wood III
The sultry smell of desire. It’s a long, booze-filled night under Big Daddy’s plantation roof in 1950s Mississippi. Maggie “the Cat” still burns hot for her ex-football star husband Brick, but he only has eyes for the bottom of a whiskey bottle. Meanwhile, Big Daddy is dying, and the family vultures are swarming for a big slice of the inheritance pie. Couched in the earthy language of the deep South, this uncompromising, intensely human portrait of a family shows why Williams is one of America’s greatest playwrights.
